View program page →University of Arkansas, Walton College: Financial Management/Investment concentration covers commercial banking, financial risk management, and business risk management directly in its published course description.
University of Houston, Bauer: Bauer's finance major covers financing and investment decisions for corporations and financial institutions, with the same faculty teaching the on-campus and online sections.
Florida International University: FIU's finance curriculum explicitly names banking, financial institutions, and financial markets among its core topic areas.
University of Maryland Global Campus: UMGC's finance curriculum includes financial analysis and capital budgeting relevant to credit and lending roles, and the program is built for working adults already inside a bank who want the degree without stepping away from the job.
What commercial banks actually screen for
Commercial banking, credit analyst, relationship manager, portfolio manager tracks at regional and super-regional banks, recruits differently than investment banking. Pedigree matters less. What matters more: can you read a set of financials, underwrite a credit, and hold a conversation with a business owner about their balance sheet. A finance degree with real coursework in financial institutions, credit analysis, and risk management does more for you here than a general business degree does.
If you're already working in banking operations, treasury, or retail banking and want to move into a credit or relationship role, most regional banks care more about your credit training program completion and your internal track record than which online program you finished. The degree opens the door to the credit training program; it doesn't replace it.
One real path worth knowing: I know someone who went the online-degree route, then lateraled through IR advisory and a tech-company financial analyst seat before landing in a regional coverage IB group at a balance-sheet bank in the Wells Fargo or KeyBank tier, the exact profile this page is about. It took multiple moves over several years, not one application. See the full, anonymized story on the online business degrees ranking.
Matching the program to your starting point
If you're starting from scratch with no banking background, UMGC is the strongest fit despite ranking lowest on the parent finance list. Its curriculum is explicitly built for working adults with no prior finance experience, which matches the profile of most people trying to break into credit or relationship banking from a retail or operations role. The 33% completion rate on the parent ranking looks alarming out of context, but it reflects a largely part-time, nontraditional student body working full time while enrolled, which is exactly who this page is for. If you are already inside a bank, that same trait means UMGC will not slow down your current job the way a heavier-courseload program would.
Arkansas and FIU are both stronger if you want the degree to also keep a door open to corporate finance or a lateral move later. Both post real earnings and completion numbers on the parent ranking (Arkansas: $87,717 median, 71% completion; FIU: $71,355 median, 74% completion) that UMGC does not match, because both serve a more traditional student population. If commercial banking is a starting point rather than a fixed destination, one of these two keeps more options open.
Houston's Bauer program is the pick if your target is a larger regional or super-regional bank rather than a community bank. Its finance faculty and curriculum carry more institutional weight than UMGC's, without Arkansas or FIU's price advantage. Worth the premium specifically if you are targeting a name-brand regional bank's credit training program, where the school on the resume clears an initial screen before your actual credit skills get evaluated.
How this ranking was built
Every figure above comes from the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard field-of-study data, cross-checked against each school's own published tuition and program pages. We did not survey these schools, and we do not have a paid or affiliate relationship with any of them. Read the full methodology page for the scoring formula, data vintage, and what we excluded.
